What is Rotaract

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored organization made up of  young indiviuals between the ages of 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs, either community or university-based, provide an opportunity for young adults to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.  Clubs around the world also take part in inter nations service projects, in a global effort to bring peace and inter nation understanding to the world.

Most Rotaract activities take place at the club level. Rotaract clubs hold formal meetings, usually every two weeks, which feature speakers, special outings, social activities, discussions or visits to other clubs. Club members get together on designated days for service project work, social events, or professional /leadership development workshops.

The History

Rotaract stands for ” Rotary in action”.

Rotaract has evolved quickly in its short but dynamic history. In the early 1960s, Rotary clubs around the world began to sponsor university youth groups as community service projects. The 1967-68 RI president, Luther H. Hodges, and the RI Board of Directors considered this club activity to have international relevance, and Rotaract was approved in 1968 as an official program for Rotary clubs. The first club chartered was the Rotaract Club of North Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, on 13 March 1968. Several decades later, the Rotaract program has grown into a strong,Rotaract clubs are an important part of Rotary’s extended family. Rotary International is a worldwide service organization for leading business and professional leaders, with more than 1.2 million members in over 31,000 Rotary clubs. Together they work in cooperation as partners in service.

Today there are over 8,700 Rotary-supported Rotaract clubs with more than 200,000 members spanning 120 countries, making Rotaract one of the largest youth organizations in the world.
